Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Contributors in Immunology

Immunology

complement receptors (CR)

Biology; Immunology

Cell-surface proteins on various cells that recognize and bind complement proteins that have bound pathogens or other antigens. CR on phagocytes allow them to identify pathogens coated with ...

complementarity-determining regions (CDRs)

Biology; Immunology

Parts of immunoglobulins and T-cell receptors that determine their specificity and make contact with specific ligand. The CDRs are the most variable part of the molecule and contribute to the ...

concanavalin A (con A)

Biology; Immunology

A lectin derived from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) that stimulates T lymphocytes to undergo mitosis and proliferate, and induces erythrocyte agglutination.

conformational epitopes

Biology; Immunology

or discontinuous epitopes, on a protein antigen are formed from several separate regions in the primary sequence of a protein brought together by protein folding. Antibodies that bind conformational ...

congenic (also coisogenic)

Biology; Immunology

Describes two individuals who differ only in the genes at a particular locus and are identical at all other loci.

constant region (C region)

Biology; Immunology

The invariant carboxyl-terminal portion of an immu noglobulin or TCR molecule, as distinct from the variable region at the amino terminus of the chain.

contact dermatitis

Biology; Immunology

A type IV, T lymphocyte-mediated hypersensitivity reaction of the delayed type that develops in response to an allergen applied in the skin.
