Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Contributors in Immunology

Immunology

antigen processing

Biology; Immunology

The degradation of proteins into peptides that can bind to MHC molecules for presentation to T cells. All protein antigens must be processed into peptides before they can be presented by MHC ...

antigen receptor

Biology; Immunology

The specific antigen-binding receptor on T or B lymphocytes; these receptors are transcribed and translated from rearrangements and translocation of V, D, and J genes.

antigen-binding site

Biology; Immunology

The part of an immunoglobulin molecule or T-cell receptor that binds antigen specifically.

antigenic determinant

Biology; Immunology

A single antigenic site or epitope on a complex antigenic molecule or particle.

antigen-presenting cell (APC)

Biology; Immunology

A specialized type of cell, bearing cell-surface class II MHC (major histocompatibility complex) molecules, involved in processing and presentation of antigen to T cells.

anti-immunoglobulin antibodies

Biology; Immunology

Antibodies against immunoglobulin constant domains that are useful for detecting bound antibody molecules in immunoassays and other applications.

antiserum

Biology; Immunology

The fluid component of clotted blood from an immune individual that contains a heterogeneous collection of antibodies against the molecule used for immunization. Such antibodies bind the antigen used ...
