Molecular biology
death-associated protein (DAP)
Biology; Biochemistry
A protein that induces apoptosis. It binds to a death receptor on the plasma membrane, resulting in an intracellular cascade of events that acitivates caspases and eventually causes apoptosis.
hemidesmosome
Biology; Biochemistry
A structure of the plasma membrane of an epithelial cell that extends into both the cytoplasm and the extracellular space, and anchors the cell to the extracellular matrix of the basal lamina.
synzyme
Biology; Biochemistry
A synthetic enzyme, e.g. a polymer with an inert backbone, upon which dissociating groups like amines and carboxyls are mounted in a random fashion; or a protein product of in vitro evolution.
side shelf experiment
Biology; Biochemistry
An experimental approach to discovery of a metabolic precursor or regulator, in which candidates for activity are randomly selected according to availability rather than by intelligent design.
molecular modelling
Biology; Biochemistry
Any of the computational approaches for relating chemical or physical properties to structure, e.g. design of agonists or antagonists from the X-ray crystallography data of a receptor protein.
excimer
Biology; Biochemistry
In fluorescence spectroscopy, a dimer of a fluorophore that is stable only in the excited state, e.g. of aromatics such as pyrene or 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO, used for scintillation counting).
simple sequence DNA
Biology; Biochemistry
The highly repetitive non-coding DNA of a satellite that serves a structural role in mitosis; used for genetic characterization by its polymorphism (simple sequence length polymorphism, SSLP).
