Boston
The state capital of Massachusetts, United States. Boston is the largest city in New England and is sometimes referred to as the unofficial “Capital of New England”.
Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The city was founded in 1630 by Puritan colonists who came from England. In the late 18th century, Boston was the site of various events during the American Revolution. The city became a major shipping port and manufacturing hub once independence from England was achieved.
Today, Boston is home to a number of prestigious colleges, universities and medical institutions. Research, finance, technology and engineering also contribute to the local economy. The city has the 6th largest economy in the country and the 12th largest economy in the world.
According to the 2010 Census, Boston had a population of 617,594 inhabitants. The city has and continues to experience gentrification. Its metropolitan area, called “Greater Boston”, is home to 4.5 million inhabitants. This makes it the 10th largest metropolitan area in the country. The city itself has one of the highest costs of living in the United States.
Tourists frequent Boston regularly. Major attractions are both historical and contemporary in nature. They include the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, the USS Constitution, the Museum of Fine Arts and Fenway Park.
