Pen Liyuan

Peng Liyuan (born November 20, 1962) is a popular Chinese folk music singer and the wife of Chinese leader, Xi Jinping. She became China’s first lady when her husband was officially named Chinese President in March 2013. A celebrated performer who regularly appeared on the annual CCTV New Year's Gala, a widely viewed mainland Chinese television program that airs during the Chinese New Year, Peng gained popularity as an elegant and fashionable singer in the 1980s and 1990s. She won many honors in singing competitions nationwide. Her most famous works include People from Our Village, Mount Chomolungma, and On the Plains of Hope.

Peng largely stayed low-key from public life after her husband was made China's leader-in-waiting in 2007. She later became an ambassador for the World Health Organization. Among the issues she worked on included tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS — diseases that carried considerable social stigma in China.

Peng is a civilian member of China's People's Liberation Army and holds the civilian rank comparable to major general. She was one of the first in China to obtain a master's degree in traditional ethnic music when the degree was established in the 1980s.
