general laborer

A professional who performs any combination of following tasks to assist workers engaged in production of iron and steel. Respnsibilities include:

  • Feeds and off bears equipment, such as conveyors, pilers, and loaders, to charge furnaces, transport hot metal to rollers, and store finished products.
  • Bundles and ties metal rods, sheets, and wire, using banding machine and handtools.
  • Attaches crane hooks, slings, or cradles to material for moving by overhead crane operator.
  • Transports material to and from production stations, using handtruck.
  • Feeds material, such as ganister, magnesite, and limestone into crushers to prepare additives for molten metal.
  • Grinds defects, such as burrs, seams, and scratches from rolled steel, using portable grinder.
  • Sweeps scale from work area and empties dust bins, using wheelbarrow, broom, and shovel.
  • Breaks up manganese and scrap metal to facilitate handling, using sledge and pneumatic hammer.
  • Marks identification numbers on steel billets, using chalk.
  • Verifies dimension of products, using fixed gauge.
  • Wipes grease and oil from machinery with rags and solvent.
  • May be designated Conveyor Feeder; Crusher Feeder; Loading Checker; Marker; Racker; Scrap Breaker.
