trolling

The act of posting comments or messages that are deliberately divisive, offensive, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic, with the sole purpose of provoking emotional reactions that disrupt otherwise genuine online discussions, especially those that involve controversial topics.

Note: Favoured venues for the activity include social media sites, such as internet chat rooms, email or Facebook groups, discussion forums, blogs, Twitter, and YouTube. The inclusion of offensive and inappropriate language, including that which is racist and sexist, repetition of circular arguments, personal attacks, generic examples, and an anonymous status all help to distinguish it from genuine thought-provoking debate. The activity is maintained when such posts are responded to, therefore the best way to discourage trolling is to ignore it, and if possible, block any user, or "troll," who instigates it.
