Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Contributors in Immunology

Immunology

autoimmune diseases

Biology; Immunology

Diseases in which the pathology is caused by adaptive immune responses to self antigens are called autoimmune diseases.

granzymes

Biology; Immunology

Granzymes are serine proteases produced by cytotoxic T cells and are involved in inducing apoptosis in the target cell.

mucins

Biology; Immunology

Mucins are highly glycosylated cell-surface proteins. Mucinlike molecules are bound by L-selectin in lymphocyte homing.

pathology

Biology; Immunology

Pathology is the scientific study of disease. The term pathology is also used to describe detectable damage to tissues.

β2-microglobulin.

Biology; Immunology

The light chain of the MHC class I proteins is called β2-microglobulin. It binds noncovalently to the heavy or α chain.

isotypic exclusion

Biology; Immunology

Isotypic exclusion describes the use of one or other of the light-chain isotypes, κ or λ, by a given B cell or antibody.

cutaneous lymphocyte antigen

Biology; Immunology

Cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA) is a cell-surface molecule that is involved in lymphocyte homing to the skin in humans.
