Immunology
Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Immunology
complement component 8 (C8)
Biology; Immunology
A complement component comprising an α and β chain that participates in the membrane attack complex (MAC).
C8 deficiency
Biology; Immunology
An uncommon genetic disorder with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance in which affected individuals are missing one or more C8 chains. This is associated with a defective ability to form a ...
complement component 9 (C9)
Biology; Immunology
A complement component comprised of a single chain protein that binds to the C5b678 complex on the cell surface. The interaction of 12 to 15 C9 molecules with one C5b678 complex produces the membrane ...
C9 deficiency
Biology; Immunology
A very uncommon genetic disorder with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance in which only trace amounts of C9 are present in the plasma of affected persons. There is a defective ability to form ...
carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)
Biology; Immunology
A membrane glycoprotein epitope that is present in the fetal gastrointestinal tract in normal conditions. CEA levels are elevated in almost one third of patients with colorectal, liver, pancreatic, ...
carrier
Biology; Immunology
A large immunogenic molecule or particle to which a hapten or other non immunogenic, epitope-bearing molecule may attach, allowing it to become immunogenic.
caspases
Biology; Immunology
are a family of closely related cysteine proteases that cleave proteins at aspartic acid residues. They have important roles in apoptosis.
