Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Immunology

classical pathway

Biology; Immunology

The classical pathway of complement activation is the pathway activated by C1 binding either directly to bacterial surfaces or to antibody, that serves as a means of flagging the bacteria as foreign. ...

trans-activating protein (Tat)

Biology; Immunology

The Tat protein is a product of the tat gene of HIV. It is produced when latently infected cells are activated, and it binds to a transcriptional enhancer in the long terminal repeat of the provirus, ...

high-zone tolerance

Biology; Immunology

Tolerance to injected protein antigens occurs at low or high doses of antigen. Tolerance induced by the injection of high doses of antigen is called high-zone tolerance, whereas tolerance produced ...

M cells

Biology; Immunology

Antigens and pathogens enter the body from the intestines through cells called microfold or M cells, which are specialized for this function. They are found over the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, ...

granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor

Biology; Immunology

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a cytokine involved in the growth and differentiation of myeloid and monocytic lineage cells, including dendritic cells, monocytes and ...

inducible NO synthase

Biology; Immunology

Macrophages and many other cells have an inducible NO synthase, or iNOS, that is induced by many different stimuli to activate NO synthesis. This is a major mechanism of host resistance to ...

B-cell linker protein (BLNK)

Biology; Immunology

The adaptor protein BLNK operates in B cells in the same way as LAT does in T cells; it has multiple tyrosine residues that are targets for phosphorylation, and recruits signaling molecules to ...
