Typology of dictionaries - the classification of types of dictionaries, phrasebooks, and encyclopedias The type of a separate dictionary is determined by the basic information, which it contains, by its common name. The classification of dictionaries, on the basis of six juxtapositions: An academic dictionary [1] - dictionary-phrasebook An academic dictionary is normative, describing the lexical system of the given language: in it there doesn't need to be facts, contradicting the modern use. In contrast with the academic dictionaries, the dictionary-phrasebooks can contain information about a bigger selection of words, going outside of the normal literature language. [2] Encyclopedia dictionary - common dictionary The contrast of encyclopedia(they describe things in reality) and linguistic dictionaries (They describe words) Thesaurus [3] — common, (intelligible and translation) dictionary Dictionaries are considered a thesaurus, where all the words happen to be, meeting in the given language even though it is one time.
